Being a foster parent isn’t easy, but it’s important to try to bond with the children in your care. It can be tough, but sometimes all it takes is finding a unique activity you can enjoy together. Every child is different, and their interests will vary. However, if you’re looking to spend some quality time together to bond with your foster child at home, you might want to consider the following suggestions.
#1: Cook Together
When leaving the house can seem like a huge chore, it’s time to break out the pots and pans. However, if you get everyone in on making meals, or baking dessert, it can be a fun time that helps chase away boredom. And if everyone pitches in on the dishes afterward, they’ll get done equally fast.
#2: Try A New Game
Games are the ideal group activity. They create a task you can all work toward, and they help players have fun. However, if Monopoly and Sorry don’t hold any appeal (particularly since they can be seen as very competitive), then don’t be afraid to try something new. There’s been a board game revolution in recent years, with everything from Betrayal At House on The Hill (a modular game that plays like a constantly shifting horror movie) to Pandemic (a game where you and your fellow players try to stop the spread of a global virus, something which might be a little on-the-nose right about now). Competitive or cooperative, there are enough options out there that you can likely find something for every taste.
#3: Audiobook Night
We’re all used to family movie night, but what about something a little different? Something from the days of the radio specials, perhaps? Instead of putting on a movie, which does all the imagining for you, find an audiobook you’ve all wanted to listen to. For extra points, get one with a full cast of actors! Pick a time to gather, get comfortable, and start listening. It’s comfy, quiet, and while listening you can each still do something like craft, draw, or even play a simple iPhone game with the sound off. Pick the right book, and it might become a new family tradition.
