OKLAHOMA (May 7, 2026) – During National Foster Care Month, Jennie Williams is a powerful reminder that foster care is about more than placement — it’s about belonging, advocacy and making room at the table for every child.

Williams has been a foster parent for nearly a decade, but her passion began long before. While volunteering at an orphanage in Mexico nearly 20 years ago, she formed a bond with a young child that shaped her lifelong commitment to children and families.

After returning to the United States, Williams earned a degree in social work and built a career serving children, but becoming a foster parent wasn’t easy. Due to being legally blind, she initially faced barriers that prevented licensure.

Rather than walking away, Williams advocated for change and helped revise Oklahoma policy, opening doors not only for herself but for others as well.

In her home, children experience individualized care — from familiar foods to routines that honor their history and needs. She emphasizes joy, creativity and connection as essential parts of healing.

Williams also encourages those interested in fostering to start with respite care and to support foster families in practical ways — building a broader community around children in care.

“Remember to find moments of fun and joy even during busy times,” says Williams. “Spending quality, enjoyable moments with your child is essential and can truly make a positive difference. It helps bring happiness back into your daily routine and strengthens your bond.”

During Foster Care Month, her message is simple: everyone has something to offer.
